Artist: Brad Goldberg
Description: The origin of Allen can be found in an impressively constructed dam of regional limestone, which was built to generate energy in the form of steam to feed the railroad, expanding throughout America. The artist, working with the architect of the New City Hall at the beginning of the conceptual design stage of the project, suggested the use of the original dam structure material. This regional limestone with its natural strata texture became the skin of the architecture and the raw material for the site work. Inspired by the dam and the strata of limestone underlying the Texas landscape, “Stratum” exemplifies the construction of a work of landscape sculpture, using only regional materials. All stone elements were fabricated and installed by the artist on site, bringing a high level of craftsmanship to the project, equal to the initial inspiration of the local limestone dam.
