Water Conservation & Drought Contingency Plan

About Our Water Supply:

The City of Allen receives its water from the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) located in Wylie, Texas. The City of Allen joined NTMWD as a member city in 1998 as a better way to serve our growing population.  In 1998 our population was 27,554 and in March, 2008 our population was 81,444. The City has almost tripled size in just 10 years!  Without NTMWD, the City would not have been able to supply our fast growing population with adequate water.  The NTMWD began more than 50 years ago when the area population was 32,000. Today the NTMWD provides treated drinking water to over 1.3 million people in the 59 cities, towns, special utility districts, and water supply corporations served through voluntary contracts. By 2050, the population in the NTMWD service area is expected to reach 3.5 million, almost 3 times the amount as today! In order for NTMWD to supply the same amount of water in 2050 as today, there would need to be 5 more reservoirs built the size of Lake Lavon! While NTMWD is continuously planning for the region’s population growth and water demand, without strategic planning and conservation efforts, we may face a critical water shortage in as little as 42 years!  It is now estimated that over 25% of future water supply for our region will come from conservation efforts.  Recognizing the need for efficient use of existing water supplies, the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has developed guidelines and requirements governing the development of water conservation and drought contingency plans for public water suppliers.

The City of Allen’s current Water Conservation and Drought Contingency and Water Emergency Response Plan for the City of Allen, Texas (City Plan) follows recommendations from NTMWD and meets the guidelines and requirements of TCEQ.  The City Plan was adopted through Ordinance Number 2760-8-08 on August 12, 2008. The City Plan’s strategies include restricted and modified outdoor watering practices, as well as a rebate program. This guide will provide information on the City Plan and restrictions in regards to water usage.
