Animal Control Officers are authorized to impound any animal running at large, except a cat. Officers can impound a cat when a complaint has been received where it is causing a nuisance or hazard to health or welfare of humans or the animal population.
An animal impounded or brought to the shelter as a stray will be held for a period of five days for the owner to reclaim, or a period of seven days if it has a current city registration tag. If the animal is not reclaimed, it may be put up for adoption.
A daily handling fee is charged in addition to the impoundment fee. An animal held in quarantine incurs an additional daily fee.
Any person having knowledge of an animal bite or scratch to a human will report the incident to Animal Control within 24 hours of the time of the incident. All dogs and cats that bite or scratch a human must be quarantined for ten days regardless if they are currently vaccinated for rabies or not. The location of where the biting animal can be quarantined depends on the bite, but can include a veterinarian's office, the Animal Shelter or at the animal's home.
