The Communications Division provides new dispatchers with paid training that takes six months to complete. Each phase of training lasts 4-6 weeks. Dispatchers are crossed trained and must display proficiency at each phase before advancing. During training, a new dispatcher must rotate through all of the different shift schedules in order to get accustomed to each shift. Therefore, the work schedule (hours and work days) may change during training.
The Communications Division is a 24 hour, 7 days a week operation. Emergency and non-emergency services are provided at all times. Therefore, dispatchers must be able and willing to work any shift. This includes days, evenings, late nights, weekends and holidays. Shift assignments are granted based on seniority. Every six months the Communications Division bids for shifts.
