The traffic unit of the Allen Police Department consists of one sergeant, one corporal and four motorcycle officers. The primary function of the traffic unit is to enforce state traffic laws, investigate traffic accidents, provide education to the general public regarding traffic issues and assist with complaints of abandoned and non-working vehicles. The motorcycle officers also lead parades, attend special events and escort funerals.
The department also receives Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grants that target seatbelt usage and speeding. The traffic unit and patrol officers work to gain voluntary compliance through enforcement & education while working under the guidelines of these grants and state law. The program is federally funded and state administered.
The Traffic Unit is primarily responsible for investigating traffic crashes. The figures below show the number of non-injury crashes, injury crashes and fatality crashes.
