Electric
In January 2002, the State of Texas deregulated electric service, allowing most Texas residents to choose their electric provider. Because of this, residents should know there are a variety of electric rates and contract terms available. However, the state deregulation law also allowed Rural Electric Providers and municipal-owned utilities to stay in business and not deregulate. These customers stay at a regulated electric price and cannot select any other providers. Allen has two such "cooperatives" - CoServ and Grayson-Collin Electric Cooperative.

TXU Electric Service Area
Most Allen residents reside in the former TXU service area and, therefore, their electric service has been deregulated. Residents in this area now receive electric distribution from Oncor, but can choose a different retail electric provider (REP). Information on providers can be found at Power to Choose or by called 1-866-4-TEX (1.866.797.4839). Residents without Internet access may use free Internet service provided at the Allen Public Library.

Local Telephone Service
Local telephone service is regulated by the Public Utility Commission of Texas and, during the past few years, the industry has become a competitive, deregulated market. There are a number of phone service providers for customers to choose from when selecting local phone service.

Trash & Recycling Collection
The City of Allen has contract with Community Waste Disposal, Inc., of Dallas (CWD) for its trash / recycling collection services. If your new home does not have a trash or recycling poly cart, they can be ordered through the Utility Billing Division at the same time you establish water and sewer services by contacting the City of Allen Utility Billing Division at 214.509.4560.

For specific information about trash collection and recycling, please visit the Community Services Department, Residential Solid Waste Division. Missed collection or other problems should be reported directly to CWD.
