- Support Services: This division runs many of the "behind-the-scenes" aspects of the Allen Police Department, including communications/dispatch, vehicle service, animal control, school resource officers, records and the jail. This division also manages property and evidence.
- Professional Standards Unit: This unit includes Background investigations, Recruiting, Training and Internal Affairs. Internal Affairs Investigators hold all members of the Allen Police Department to the highest standards by ensuring they adhere to all departmental policies and procedures.
Best Practice Agency
APD was an early adopter of the Texas Law Enforcement Best Practices Recognition Program through the Texas Police Chiefs Association Foundation. To become a Best Practice Agency, departments must comply with 166 best practice standards covering 12 critical areas of operation, including: use of force; search, seizure and arrest; care, custody and restraint of prisoners; and selection and hiring of officers, among others. APD achieved recognition as a Best Practice Agency in 2007 and has maintained this status each year to date.
APD was established in 1968 with the hiring of the City of Allen's first Chief of Police, Jerry Burton. Its first official headquarters was located in a small brick storefront on the corner of Main Street and Butler Drive. In 1989, Allen Police moved to its current headquarters located at 205 W. McDermott Drive. A second floor was added in 2001 to accommodate the growing department.
