[ARCHIVED] Allen Police, Fire Departments Accepting Applications for Citizens Academies

The Allen Police and Fire departments are recruiting residents for the upcoming Citizens Police Academy and Citizens Fire Academy. The multi-week courses offer an exclusive look at the city's emergency operations.

In the Citizens Fire Academy, firefighters will give hands-on emergency training, lead tours of Fire Station 5, teach proper fire extinguisher use and more. Participants will have the opportunity to climb a 100-foot aerial ladder, operate the jaws of life and ride on real emergency calls. The academy meets from 7 to 9:30 p.m. every Thursday, beginning Feb. 26. Two optional Saturday classes are also offered. Applications may be picked up at the Allen Fire Department Administration Building (310 Century Parkway) or downloaded at AllenFire.org/Academy. Applications will be accepted through February 13.

The Citizens Police Academy is a 12-week course operated by Allen Police Department's Community Relations Unit. Participants learn about topics ranging from criminal law and patrol tactics to effective surveillance techniques. The group may take field trips to facilities such as the Collin County Detention Center, Collin County Medical Examiner's Office and the police shooting range. Classes meet Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., beginning March 5. Applications are available at Allen Police Department Headquarters (205 W. McDermott Dr.) or online at AllenPolice.org/Academy. Applications must be submitted by March 4.
