[ARCHIVED] Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week Begins Nov. 14

The City of Allen is bringing awareness to hunger and homelessness in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

Mayor Stephen Terrell proclaimed Nov. 14-22, 2015 as Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week during the council meeting on Nov. 10. Members of the Collin County Homeless Coalition accepted the honor.

The week will highlight the difficulty and loneliness of those without a home and living in poverty, and encourage the public to become involved in efforts to end homelessness and hunger in Collin County.

According to coalition chair Stacy Brown, 31% of homeless people in Collin County are children. Fifty-six percent of adults are employed, but can’t afford a place to live. Eighty-eight percent are homeless for less than a year.

In addition to the Collin County Homeless Coalition, Allen residents have access to many resources for financial and emotional assistance. This includes Allen Community Outreach, which operates a food pantry and resale shop, along with providing holiday meals and gifts. The Assistance Center of Collin County also provides food and financial assistance, school supplies and a Christmas store.

These organizations also offer volunteer and donation opportunities for anyone who wants to help fight hunger and homelessness.
