[ARCHIVED] Allen Police Offer Glimpse inside the Mind of a Thief

For over twenty years, Michael Shayne Durden burglarized hundreds of homes across Collin and Dallas counties. Now in jail, he shares tips with homeowners about how to protect their property.

In an exclusive interview with Allen Police Sgt. Jon Felty and Allen City TV, Durden explains what makes a neighborhood attractive to thieves. He also suggests ways for homeowners to protect their valuables and minimize the threat of a burglary.

“Even in five to seven minutes I don’t have time to case your whole house. I don’t have time to turn your whole house upside down,” says Durden. “There are ways of hiding your jewelry from people.”

During the 43-minute discussion, Durden shares surprising insight on using dogs, alarms or lights to scare away burglars. He also stresses the importance of Neighborhood Watch programs.

“It will totally deter me from going anywhere near that neighborhood,” says Durden. “I don’t want ever to enter into a situation where I’m confronted by anyone.”
