Allen residents will have the opportunity to vote on the next series of capital improvement projects at an upcoming bond election, set for May 7. The City of Allen’s bond package includes $93.15 million in capital improvement projects, including a library expansion, new recreation center, new fire station, various street improvements and funding for public art. Allen City Council ordered the election during the Feb. 9 council meeting.

The bond package will be divided into five separate propositions, including:
• Proposition 1: Public Safety Facilities ($24.445 million)
• Proposition 2: Park and Recreation Facilities ($27 million)
• Proposition 3: Municipal Library Expansion ($16.045 million)
• Proposition 4: Street Improvements ($23.89 million)
• Proposition 5: Public Art Projects ($1.77 million)

Projects were identified through a citizen input process led by Allen residents. More than a hundred people participated in the community meetings.

According to the Capital Improvement Program’s finance committee, all projects can be accomplished according to a seven-year timeline with a potential minimum tax increase of $0.004 (less than ½ a cent). This means residents with an average home value of $200,000 would pay an estimated $8 more per year. However, the tax rate impact is based on very conservative financial assumptions and likely will not be necessary.
