Instead of sending yard waste to the landfill, Allen takes part in a money-saving program that provides free compost to its residents.
The City collects yard waste such as tree and brush trimmings, grass clippings and leaves on residents’ designated trash day. Residents can also drop off large loads of yard waste at the Texas Pure Products wood grinding facility (9901 Custer Road). Instead of sending this organic waste to a landfill, Allen partners with four other Collin County cities to compost the yard waste. A limited amount of the compost is then offered free of charge to Allen residents at the Jupiter Road compost site (510 S. Jupiter Road).
By diverting compost from local landfills, the City of Allen saves about $15 per ton in disposal fees—a savings of nearly 40%.
The compost site is open February through November on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 8 a.m. Compost is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents must bring their own shovel and covered container. Each household may collect up to one cubic yard of compost per month.
