Allen Police could enhance their firearms training if voters approve a $24.4 million bond proposal focused on public safety. Officers lost access to a local training range in 2013, forcing them to make a two-hour round-trip to Greenville for mandated proficiency training.
The training center would have the 50-yard capability needed to train on patrol rifles. It would also accommodate specialized training. By eliminating the travel time, officers will be able to participate in enhanced reality-based training and decision-making scenarios, in addition to mandatory training.
The training center ($7.9M) is one of three proposed projects grouped into Proposition 1 on the May 7 ballot. Other projects include repairs and enhancements to Allen’s Central Fire Station ($6.6M) and the construction of Fire Station #6 ($9.9M). The bond election also includes separate propositions for parks and recreation, streets and drainage, public art, and a library expansion. Early voting runs April 25 through May 3.
