[ARCHIVED] Proposed Bond Funding Would Expand Allen’s Public Art

public art bond election

Allen will add to its public art collection if voters approve $1.77 million in bond funding during the May 7 election. The funds would enhance public projects by incorporating specific artwork, sculpture or architectural elements.

Allen uses public art funds to commission works for community display. The public art program began in 2007 after voters approve $1.3 million in bond funding to spend on future arts projects. Numerous installations followed, including works at Allen Public Library, Fire Station 5, and—most recently—the Cottonwood Creek Trail Bridge.

The Public Art Master Plan is updated based on community input on design preferences, desired locations and goals for future art. Projects are chosen by the Public Art Committee. Each project is guided by a citizen panel which selects artists and refines designs.

The public art funding will be listed as Proposition 5 on the May 7 ballot. The money accounts for approximately 2% of the total bond package, which includes separate propositions for public safety, parks and recreation, streets and drainage, and a library expansion. Early voting runs April 25 through May 3.
