Nine-year-old Colin and 11-year-old Reese Fleming were recognized by Allen City Council on Tuesday for quick thinking that saved their father’s life.
Their dad was on a ladder in the garage, putting Christmas decorations back in the attic, when the ladder collapsed. He fell to the ground, landing on the ladder and fracturing his skull.
Colin heard the commotion and ran to the garage. He found his dad bleeding and unconscious. Colin yelled to his big sister, Reese, who grabbed her dad’s iPhone and tried to dial 911. When she couldn’t get it to work, she ran to the neighbor and asked them to call an ambulance.
Allen firefighters, police and paramedics showed up quickly. But emergency crews agree that Reese and Colin should be credited for the speedy response that saved their dad’s life.
“I want to let you know how important it is that someone taught you to dial 911 and to remain calm to tell the dispatcher what you knew,” said Allen Fire Department Captain Roger Nolan. “Thank God for the neighbor who helped you. A lot of things lined up to help us do the job we needed to do.”
Mayor Stephen Terrell presented Colin and Reese with Shining Star Awards during the council meeting on March 23. The honor is bestowed on Allen citizens who perform an outstanding deed or go beyond the call of duty. Council members were joined by members of the Allen Fire Departments, along with Colin and Reese’s father, for the presentation.
