[ARCHIVED] No Increase in Trash Fees for Allen Residents

Current residential and commercial solid waste fees will stay in place another year, following a vote by Allen City Council.

The city will pay a small annual rate adjustment to CWD, including:

• Two cents extra for each primary residential trash cart
• Two cents extra for each second residential trash cart
• One cent extra for each second residential recycling cart

The total cost of this annual rate adjustment is approximately $20,000, but the cost will not be passed to residents.

“The solid waste fund is in excellent financial condition,” said Community Services Director Steve Massey in his report to council members. “In fact, our last rate increase was in June 2010.”

Massey also provided an update on the city’s senior discount program, which began on Feb. 1, 2016. The program offers a 20% discount on standard trash and household hazardous waste fees. More than 1,700 seniors are now enrolled, each saving $3.12 per month.

“We’ve had a robust application for this program,” said Massey. “[It’s] about a $66,000 cost avoidance to the seniors in the city in this fiscal year.”
