Allen residents who pass by Celebration Park on Saturday may see something unfamiliar being played: a game of cricket.
The Dallas County Cricket Club is sponsoring “Cric-Allen 2016,” an all-day cricket tournament, which is free to attend and benefits the Allen Parks Foundation.
“Cricket is similar to baseball,” said Vatsa Ramanathan, Vice President of the Allen Parks Foundation and a tournament participant. “A lot of the same skills from baseball are also useful in cricket.”
The tournament is comprised of six teams representing communities throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, including one team from Allen. This is the first-ever cricket tournament held by Dallas County Cricket Club in Allen and could become an annual event.
The Allen Parks Foundation will have a tent set up and representatives on-site during the event at Celebration Park to answer questions about the foundation and its involvement with the tournament.
Though Allen does not have designated cricket fields, games have been held previously at Celebration Park and Suncreek Park, which are currently the only two parks in Allen that have an area that is big enough for the sport to be played.
