Future students at Lowery Freshman Center will have more space for learning and athletics.
The district plans to demolish the bulk of the school’s classrooms and rebuild them in a new configuration, bringing the total number of classrooms at the campus to 80. New turf fields will also be added north of the existing stadium and tennis courts.
The AISD requested a zoning change to the property, which Allen City Council members approved on Nov. 8. The base zoning will change to CF (Community Facility), a common designation for government and school buildings. The expansion will be considered a Planned Development, which allows the City of Allen to more closely examine the project’s appearance, traffic flow and screening.
Due to the growth of the campus, the AISD will rebuild Pebblebrook Drive as a three-lane road to improve flow in and out of the campus. The AISD and the City will work jointly to monitor traffic after the expansion is completed in order to assess the need for additional traffic control measures.
Allen ISD expects the new Lowery Freshman Center to open for students in August 2018.
