[ARCHIVED] Fifth Case of West Nile Virus Reported in Allen

To date there have been five cases of West Nile Virus reported in Allen residents and one case outside the city limits but with an Allen mailing address.

The City of Allen continues to implement a proactive mosquito abatement program. Mosquito control efforts include treating areas of stagnant water, code enforcement activities and public education.

  • Staff is currently monitoring 33 areas with stagnant water, inspecting them every 30 days and treating them with larvicide as needed.
  • To date staff has treated 25 stagnant swimming pools.
  • In the last 30 days, staff has responded to 47 complaints from residents regarding standing water and similar nuisance situations. All complaints have been investigated and addressed. On average staff is receiving 15 -20 calls/emails per week with questions regarding WNV and the City’s mosquito control activities.

Citizens can report areas of stagnant water or concern by calling 214.509.4160.

In addition to draining standing water around your home, recommended precautions to follow include applying insect repellent that contains DEET (N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide) to clothing and exposed skin, wearing light colored, long sleeves and pants while outside, minimizing outdoor activities during the dawn and dusk periods of the day, and ensuring doors and windows remain properly closed to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.
