Allen Police Department’s next big technology upgrade is being created just down the street.

On June 27, city council members approved the purchase of in-car video systems and body cameras from WatchGuard Video, an Allen company located mere blocks from City Hall.

The cameras capture synchronized video of an incident from multiple vantage points. The purchase, funded in part by a state grant, will allow widespread use of police body cameras by Allen Police for the first time in the agency’s history.

“We are proud to have the opportunity to support a fast-growing local business like WatchGuard,” said Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey. “These video systems will enhance police operations and our service to the Allen community.”

The 2-year, $362,798 contract includes 100 body-worn cameras and 57 in-car video cameras, along with associated charging stations, software, servers and hard drives.

WatchGuard Video is the world’s largest manufacturer of law enforcement video systems. The company is currently building a new, 140,000 square-foot headquarters in Allen. It will accommodate 500 employees and all manufacturing operations.
