Allen residents may have noticed an increase of algae in neighborhood ponds over the past few weeks. The algae look like large green and brown floating mats and commonly grow in stagnant water during the summer months when the temperature is high.
Allen Parks and Recreation’s maintenance staff is currently treating the algae to reduce the amount in city ponds, especially at Cumberland Crossing and Suncreek.
When algae outbreaks occur, treatment and reduction takes on average between 30 to 60 days. Treatment involves removing algae with nets and spraying a product on the remaining algae, causing it to break down and decay. The decaying algae can deplete oxygen in the water, so only sections of the algae are treated at a time to ensure that fish are not negatively affected.
The algae is not a health concern, but if left untreated, the algae can potentially cover entire pond surfaces, which also reduces oxygen and negatively impacts fish. Ponds with fountains can help improve oxygen levels in water, allowing for a healthier ecosystem.
