As of September 1, drivers in Texas are prohibited from reading, writing or sending electronic messages on their mobile device while driving. Under the new law, an officer must witness a driver texting, which includes messaging through social media sites and email apps, while the vehicle is in motion to issue a citation. The Allen Police Department is allowing a grace period as drivers to become aware of the new law.
This new law is in addition to the existing law of prohibiting cell phone usage in active school zones.
“The end goal of this new law is to save lives,” says Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey. “Drivers who are distracted by their cellphones create a serious public safety concern. It’s simple – don’t text and drive. It can wait.”
