[ARCHIVED] Allen Approves Water, Sewer Rate Changes

faucet

Rising water and wastewater costs have prompted Allen City Council to increase customer water and sewer rates.

Council members unanimously approved a rate increase during the September 12 meeting. For residential customers who use 10,000 gallons of water, the increase works out to an additional $8.18 monthly charge for combined water and wastewater.

Despite the change, Allen residents using 10,000 gallons per month will still pay less than residents in any of the other 12 cities who receive water and wastewater services from North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD). Allen’s water rate will also remain significantly lower than the state average.

The rate increase reflects changes in the wholesale water and wastewater rates paid by the City of Allen, along with increased maintenance and technology costs. Wholesale water rates have risen steadily since 2015, but a sufficient balance in the City’s Water/Sewer Fund allowed Allen to absorb the cost without a rate increase in the last two years. Key drivers of NTMWD rate increases include population growth, upgrades to aging infrastructure and higher public health standards set through state and federal regulations.

The rate increase will be effective November 1 and reflected in utility bills mailed to customers in late November and December.
