ALLen Reads 2018

Allen joins cities across the country participating in a community "one book" project that involves everyone reading and discussing the same book.  There are also events related to the themes of the main book selection.


The main book: "The War That Saved My Life" by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

Companion books: "Diana's White House Garden" by Elisa Carbone and "A Hat for Mrs. Goldman: A Story About Knitting and Love" by Michelle Edwards

Thursday, October 4 - Celebrating Differences

Come hear local experts discuss ways for families to cope with their loved ones who have special needs.  Topics will include effective ways to discipline kids, financial planning and how to help children transition into adulthood.  Families will have the opportunity to get more information from a variety of local businesses and service organizations who offer specific services for special needs children.


Sunday, October 7 - Family Concert, Allen Philharmonic Orchestra

A family concert designed to reinforce the themes of the 2018 ALLen Reads book selection.  Children will leans about the instrument families of the orchestra; and music from Spiderman, Moana, and Coco remind us that sometimes we have to put others before ourselves.  Instrument Petting Zoo at 2 p.m.; Concert at 3 p.m.


Thursday, October 18 - Author Talk and Book Signing

Guest author Kimberly Brubaker Bradley shares insights on her book "The War That Saved My Life."  Light refreshments will be served following the presentation.
