Allen Animal Shelter found homes for 473 animals in 2018 and helped reunite nearly 400 lost pets with their owners. The numbers were presented to Allen City Council by Animal Shelter Advisory Committee chair Deborah Michnick during the April 9 council meeting.

In addition to advertising pets on Facebook and Petfinder, Allen Animal Shelter participated in 18 special events and hosted 13 shelter tours to spread awareness of shelter services. Its 2018 Clear the Shelters event was the most successful so far, with 30 animals adopted in a single day and an additional 31 pets adopted over the prior three weeks.

Volunteers made a big impact at Allen Animal Shelter in 2018, with 36 volunteers donating 1,205 hours to play with animals and help with daily tasks. To provide better training, Allen Animal Shelter developed and launched a mentor program for new volunteers. It also partnered with Allen ISD to launch a work-based learning program for special needs students to work at the shelter part-time.

Allen City Council declared April 7-13 “Animal Control Officer Appreciation Week.” To learn more about the work of Allen Animal Shelter, visit their website.
