School’s Back in Session, So Pay Extra Attention!

School bus

Buses are rolling and kids are filling Allen sidewalks once again. Follow these three safety rules to help protect students.

  1. Know when to stop for a bus. Texas law requires drivers to stop when a school bus is stopped and operating a visual signal. This includes drivers traveling in the opposite direction of the bus – even if the road is divided by a turn lane. However, if the lanes are separated by a median or physical barrier, only motorists going in the same direction as the bus are required to stop. Review this helpful infographic for examples. Drivers who violate the law could face fines up to $1,250.
  2. Look twice when crossing intersections and slow down in school zones. Many children walk or ride their bikes to class, so be aware of your surroundings when you approach intersections – especially in residential areas. As you approach school crossings, slow down and follow the instructions of crossing guards.
  3. Allow extra time for your morning commute. Traffic congestion often worsens during the school year, so allow 5-10 extra minutes for your daily drive. You’ll be less tempted to speed or make other reckless decisions when you’re not in a rush.
