Allen is one step closer to opening the doors of its newest recreation facility. On June 8, City Council approved a $40.4 million contract for construction of the future Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center.
The project is coming to reality after almost six years of planning and community engagement, led by Allen community members. Adolfson & Peterson Construction was selected to perform the work based on qualification criteria and best value to the City. The facility is expected to break ground in the coming weeks with a grand opening anticipated in early summer 2023.
History of the project
In 2016, Allen voters approved $27 million in bond funding for Parks and Recreation capital projects, including $16 million seed money for the proposed future park and recreation center. The remainder of the funding has been approved through the Allen Community Development Corporation 4B - ½ cent Sales Tax Board and a partnership with the Allen Sports Association. Following a 12-month feasibility study, seven Steering Committee meetings and four public input meetings, multiple surveys and community engagement, City Council approved conceptual designs, amenities and the proposed project budget in 2019. The facility is named ‘Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center and Park’ after longtime Allen Mayor Stephen G. Terrell.
