[ARCHIVED] Service Center Open House and Equipment Rodeo Set for May 18

The City of Allen will celebrate National Public Works Week (NPWW) with an open house of the Allen Municipal Service Center, 900 S. Greenville Ave., on May 18 from 9 a.m. to noon. The event includes a tour of the service center, department displays and exhibits, and an equipment rodeo. The equipment rodeo will showcase all types of city vehicles including a dump truck, industrial mower, recycling truck, fire engine, police mobile command center and more.

Special exhibits will include the police department’s bomb robot which will offer an interactive presentation showing how the robot works to pick up objects and deposit into a special collection container. The Stream Trailer from the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service will be on hand with demonstrations about the effects of erosion and how to maintain our creeks and streams. CWD will have a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) recycling truck on display as well. The mechanical arm of the truck will be demonstrated and the process of compressing recyclable goods will be explained.

NPWW, May 19 – 25, recognizes the employees that work behind the scenes to maintain the infrastructure and services collectively known as public works. Public works services include those related to water and sewer distribution, roadway, park and building maintenance, trash and recycling collection, and other types of services that support infrastructure that the nation depends upon on a daily basis.

Most of the City's public works related services are provided through the Community Services Department.
