[ARCHIVED] No Crackers For Quackers - Help keep waterfowl healthy

newflash-image-waterfowl sign 648x360

Wild ducks and geese are beloved parts of our Allen parks, but they prefer to be admired from afar. In fact, sharing crackers, bread, chips and other human snacks can cause ducks and geese to develop serious health problems! Human food also disrupts their natural foraging for seeds, plants and snails, leading to overpopulation, stress and aggressive behavior.

If you do choose to share a treat, offer healthier options that more closely mimic their natural diets by sticking to the list below:

  • Half-cut seedless grapes
  • Chopped lettuce
  • Birdseed
  • Peas
  • Corn
  • Oats

Tips from a Wildlife Biologist

The experts at Texas Parks and Wildlife explain why feeding ducks and geese can create problems for birds as well as the environment.

Thank you for your help in supporting the natural ecosystems within our parks!
