[ARCHIVED] Ring in your New Year’s resolutions with some help

Welcome to 2023! With the new year now in full swing, you may be wondering how to start accomplishing your New Year’s resolutions. Don’t worry, no matter what kind of resolution you have, the City of Allen has you covered!

This year, I’d like to be more active

Fitness resolutioners unite! Allen Parks & Recreation’s facilities have just what you need to get started on your 2023 fitness journey. Don Rodenbaugh Natatorium and Joe Farmer Recreation Center both have weight training and cardio equipment. City of Allen recreation centers also host a ton of fitness classes and programs throughout the year. Sign up with a friend or family member and get sweatin’!

The upcoming Stephen G. Terrell Recreation Center (opening in late summer) will have a large weight training and cardio equipment area, indoor running/walking track, plenty of space for indoor and outdoor fitness classes and several full-sized basketball courts. Stay plugged in to see more info coming soon!

This year, I’d like to go on more adventures (in my imagination)

When the ball dropped on New Year's Eve, did you think to yourself, "I want to read more this year?" We have good news for you! Allen residents can get a free library card from Allen Public Library and read to their heart's content. Don't know where to start your reading journey? Sign up for Next Reads and APL will send you personalized book recommendations!

Like many things, reading can be more fun with other people! The library’s book clubs connect social readers together as they read and discuss new fiction and non-fiction books.

This year, I’d like to go on more adventures (in real life)

Attention everyone who’s resolution included spending more time outside: Allen’s nearly 80 miles of hike and bike trails are calling your name! Great for walking, jogging or biking, these trails crisscross the entire city and can even be a more enjoyable and active way to get you to your destination.

Many of Allen’s parks can also be accessed via the trail system. Ranging in size from small neighborhood playgrounds to massive community spaces, our parks can be the perfect places to play, go for a stroll, have a picnic or simply sit and relax in the sun.

Take a look at our parks and trails map to help plan your outdoor adventures!

This year, I’d like to learn something new

Learning new things can be a very fun and rewarding experience – and there’s no better time to learn something new than the new year! Allen Public Library offers a ton of programs for adults, teens and kids. These educational and entertaining programs range from in-depth looks at other cultures around the world, to anime group activities and crafting lessons.

For an even greater mix of info-tainment, check out the library’s OnStage@APL events! Throughout the year, local music acts, historians, media personalities and more travel to the library’s auditorium to be a part of this series of free events. All OnStage@APL events are recorded and can be watched at any time on the City of Allen’s YouTube channel.
