Allen residents may have noticed new bike route markings (“sharrows” or “share the lane”) being implemented on some of the unmarked bike routes through our community. This project is a three-year initiative to mark select on-street bike routes throughout the city. These markings are intended to enhance the awareness of our on-street bike routes and remind drivers and bicyclists of the need to share the road. Signage related to the bike route markings is scheduled for installation in April.
This project was initiated by members of the bicycling community through a funding request to the Allen Community Development Corporation. This year’s program consists of approximately 10 miles of roadway (20 lanes miles) including Malone Road, Rivercrest Boulevard, Twin Creeks/Suncreek Drives and a portion of Comanche Drive. In the following year, the City will complete Comanche Drive, Ridgemont Drive, a portion of Tatum Drive, Walnut Springs/Shallowater Drives and Roaring Springs Drive, adding another ten miles of additional bike routes on collector streets throughout the city.
